The 5 Keys To Success

What’s the formula? It’s Passion, Purpose, Focus, Follow Through, and Balance …

But what is “success?”

First, it’s important to reiterate that “success” is what we define it to be. If we don’t define what a successful life looks like (and, I don’t just mean financially) someone else will: our family of origin, marketing, our community, our fears.

Second, coaching is about creating change, moving towards a life of balance and fulfillment. We need to be engaged in all areas of our lives; and in doing so there are 5 keys to a successful life:

  • Passion is what makes your toes wiggle. What are your values? If money were no object what would you be doing?
  • Purpose is the reason we’re here. What we’re doing with our lives. Purpose is the collective sum of the different passions that make up our lives (being a good friend, caring for our children, being of service to our employer …).
  • Focus is the channeling of our activities; the concentration of our purpose into a collective whole: our life.
  • Follow Through is making sure we’re not just mired in intention; intention is well and great, but in itself it doesn’t create change. Action does.
  • Balance is just what it sounds like: it’s the even distribution of the conditions or elements, in the “correct proportions” that create a fulfilling life.

What’s the solution?

Well, there isn’t a single solution … there’s only yours! You’re the captain of your ship, so where are we going today? For me it comes down to: is it moving me towards my purpose or away from it? It’s moment to moment, as broad as what my mission in in my coaching practice, and as small as how my body feels in the seated position I’m in as I write this. Are my friendship fulfilling? Am I doing work that I love? Is my home a base of comfort and support?

To be aware is the first step. In coaching we create a “actionable space” (the expectations, rules, beliefs we bring to the coaching relationship) and in that space it’s a sandbox where we get to experiment to find out what works for you, what doesn’t, and what you’ll change.

What we don’t know will “kill” us (make life suck) but what we do know helps us makes change towards our purpose. Awareness of our passions can be wrangled into a purposeful life, a purposeful life can have focused intentions, goals, and follow through uses accountability (I will do X by X) to ensure that we’re making change. Finally, balance keeps it all in a healthy perspective, making sure we’re taking time to ‘smell the roses’ (I do!), play, relax, read, and go to the park. What’s a fulfilling life without joy?

What will you change today?

In Gratitude,
