Remake Yourself … With Little Check Off Boxes

Hi everyone. It’s Kenji.

Here’s literally this simplest way you can Remake Yourself, doing it all by yourself, without spending a single penny:

  1. Choose a habit (meditating, blog posting, whatever).
  2. Build that habit with the use of something EXTERNAL.
  3. Do it 5 minutes a day, 3-5 days a week, for 5 weeks (5-5-5).

Then see what happens.

The absolute key here is the “little” part. The 5 minutes a day part.

If we take on too much (dieting, the gym) and over-commit, what happens? Crash and burn baby. But if we sneak it up on ourselves, like meditating for 5 minutes a day, then it doesn’t feel like a chore, but just that little thing you’re going to check off for the day.

With my clients I suggest they use what I use: little check off boxes. These show up in two forms: just a regular grid that tracks the numbers 1-31 (you can guess that those are 31 days in a month), and a word document with these little seemingly insignificant babies:

M _ T _ W _ TH _ F _ S _ S _

M-Sun is proceeded by something like this: Take a 5-minute Walk – 3/7. Where the “3” part is the number you’ll shoot for out of the “7” part which is, you guessed it, the 7 days in the week.

Underperforming? Cut the number of times down per week and build it up. I used to have “Blog – 2/7” which I changed to “Blog – 1/7.”
