HOLidays not HELLidays – two 30 second survival tools

539893_484145031601515_1621960854_n-111When life feels like an utter shit-storm then the only thing you need to get done is the “next right thing” [12-step saying]. Often the next right thing is sometimes a breath, a walk, something to eat, or that box you need to unpack.

The problem with overwhelm is that we’re paying attention to, not only everything outside of ourselves, but also all of our thoughts, worries, and concerns. Therein lies the storm.

Quick Survival Tool #1 – Often when I’m sitting in meditation I put one series of thoughts, after another series of thoughts, after another series of thoughts, into little boxes and place them in a “stream” and watch them drift away (a visualization). The point being that you don’t need to worry about everything [“Worry is like paying the interest on a debt you’ll never owe”], and in fact you’re just wrecking your immune system.

Quick Survival Tool #2 – Here’s is some advice from a very well-known Jesuit priest who appears in Anne Lamotts books (Father Thom): “Left foot, right foot, breathe.”

Sometimes the next right thing is to literally put one foot in front of the other and take the next breath. When my own shit storm is more then I can cope with I use this technique. I say to myself: “Left foot, right foot, breathe. Left foot, right foot, breathe. Left foot, right foot, breathe.”

And I do the next right thing.

Good luck.

Blessings.
