W.A.I.T. – Why Am I Talking?

WAIT – Why Am I Talking? Wise speech. Are you unintentionally perpetrating violence?

• What is my intention behind what I am about to say?

• What question I could ask that would help me better understand the other person (is saying or perceiving)?

• What if I simply listen and let go of my urge to talk?

Am I talking –

• For approval or to be overly helpful? (Rescuer)• To control/take charge of the situation? (Persecutor)• To complain and whine about all I don’t like? (Victim).

I am personally feeling overwhelmed from the number of people needing to recite the horrors of the day: a child who was arrested, the latest COVID-19 news, or That Horrible Tragic Thing That Just Happened.

Instead consider asking –

• What about that is important to you?

• How may I support you?

• Want to hear a joke?

I have lived through many of the extraordinarily difficult things life had to offer – this is not denial – I'm suggesting we consider creating support, kindness, and curiosity. Please wash your hands, too.
